How it all began and what it is today...
I'm a Registered Nurse with a secret life...making handmade spa, skin care and home fragrance products.
Long story short, this all started in 1998 when I was living in the Land of Enchantment (New Mexico). I was a new nurse working on a cardiac unit, out exploring my new city, when I walked past a shop whose door was open. I remember smelling the most enticing scents from that shop. I walked into The Herb Store in Albuquerque, and the rest is history.
The Herb Store had walls full of dried herbs and spices, essential oils, handmade soaps and body products, empty jars and bottles, beeswax, salts and clays. I was instantly in love. I started by making simple salves and bath soaks, then learned how to make lotions, soaps, candles and other products. I started out giving what I made to family and friends, and when people started placing orders, my business was born. I started doing local craft shows, and spent hours upon hours on the internet and reading books, looking for recipes and learning all I could about formulating products.
I moved back to my hometown in Upstate NY to be closer to family, and continue to have my small business while working full time as a RN.
It has been a great outlet for creative energy, fun and relaxation, because most of my 19-year nursing career has been in the high-adrenaline, fast-paced world of the ER. I now do clinical documentation improvement, a job away from the bedside which has required me to use my knowledge and brain even more, so I'm no longer in such a high-stress environment and can focus more on my small business.
Years ago I printed a catalog and discovered I had about 80 different products, so it has really come a long way since its humble beginnings. I continue to do research and experiment with recipes, so my product line will always have the tried and true staples, but also some fun, fresh stuff.
Making high quality products that are as natural as possible is of great importance to me. So is making them affordable. But something else that I value is customer service, and it seems to be a dying art nowadays. Few things irritate me like being treated poorly (or like I'm invisible) when I'm a customer. I'm thankful for my customers and will do everything I can to make them happy. Feel free to contact me anytime. I'm a real person and you're not some faceless number.
On another note, I've transitioned to a starch-based diet with the addition of fruits and vegetables, without oil or animal products, to improve my health. I got my certificate in plant based nutrition through eCornell to broaden my understanding of the health benefits of this lifestyle, and it's been a wonderful journey so far. Learning to cook meals that taste and look good has been a lot of fun, and part of my blog will be dedicated to this lifestyle, including some of my recipes to give you ideas, as well as personal milestones like my drastic drop in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight that has resulted from eating this way. (If you'd like to learn more about this, just do an internet search for Dr. John McDougall, starch based diet, whole food plant based diet, or Forks Over Knives, and these will open so many doors for you).
